흔적이 결속되지 않을 때 비결속(free)이라 하며, 특히 논항위치(A-position)에 있는 요소에 결속되지 않을 경 우에 논항비결속이라 한다. 일반적으로 비결속은 논항비결속을 의미한다. 결속조건 C(Binding Condition C) 는 다음과 같이 정의된다. (1) Binding Condition C R-expressions must be free.(지시표현은 비결속되어야 한다.) (1)에 따라 이름이나 일반 명사구는 결속되지 않아야 한다. (2) He believes that John is smarter than Bill. 결속어가 논항위치(A-position)에 있을 때의 결속 관계로, 결속어가 비논항위치(A-bar position)에 있는 비논항결속과 대립된다. 대용어 (anaphor)가 논항결속되어야 하는 반면, 변항은 비논항결속되어야 하는데, 결속(binding)이란 보통 논항결속을 의미한다. (1) a. Johni is believed [S t i to be loved ti] b. 의미역(theta-role)과 문법적 기능(grammatical function; GF)이 모두 할당되는 자리를 논항위치(A-position)라 한다. 비논항위치는 핵위치 (head position) 및 논항위치(A-position)를 제외한 자리이다. 핵 (head), 보충어(complement), 부가어(adjunct), 지정어(specifier) 등의 문법적 기능 가운데 주어나 목적어와 같은 문법적 관계(grammatical relation)를 갖는 것은 지정어와 보충어 뿐이다. 주어자리의 경우 동사구의 성격에 따라 의미역이 할당될 수도, 할당되지 않을 수도 있기 때문에 의미역할당이 논항/비논항위치의 구별는 데 유일한 기준은 되지 못한다.
