B. 용법

1. 세상에 하나 밖에 없는 것(unique entity)
   
   the earth, the sea, the sky, the weather, the North Pole
   
   
2. 이미 언급된 것 (mentioned before or repeated)
   
   His car struck a tree; you can still see the mark on the tree. 
   
   
3. 구나 절의 수식을 받는 경우(modified by a phrase or clause)
   
   the boy that I met
   the place where I met him.
   the man on the donkey
   
   
4. 상황에 의해 대상이 하나가 될 때(uniquely determined by the situation)
   
   Ann is in the garden(=the garden of this house)
   He sent for the doctor(=his own doctor)
   Please pass the wine(=the wine on the table)
   
   
5. 최상급이나 서수 앞에서(before superlatives and ordinal numbers)
   
   Mont Blanc is the hightest mountain in Europe.
   He is the last man to tell a lie.
