Across-the-board rule

Ross (1967)의 용어로 Williams (1978)가 형식화한 개념. (1a)에 접속사삭감(conjunction reduction)을 적용하면 (1b)가 된다.

(1) a. Tom picked these grapes, and I washed these grapes, and Suzie will prepare these grapes
    b. Tom picked, and I washed, and Suzie will prepare, these grapes

접속사삭감 변형은 등위접속된 공통 요소를 왼쪽 또는 오른쪽에 상위부가(Chomsky-adjunction)하고, 원래의 마디를 삭제하는 규칙으로 다음과 같이 형식화할 수 있다.

 


(2)에 따라 (3b)가 비문으로 판정된다.

(3) a. Tom picked these grapes, and I washed some turnips and Suzie will prepare these grapes
b. *Tom picked, and Iwashed some turnips, and Suzie will prepare, these grapes
