1. 과거사실의 반대를 나타낼 때는 가정법과거완료를 쓴다.
   
   If you had told me about the problem, I would have helped you.
   실제로는 그 문제에 대해 말하지 않아서 도와주지 못했다.
   
   
2. If they had studied, they would have passed the exam.
   실제로는 공부를 하지 않아 시험에 떨어졌다.
   
   
3. 대개 조동사는 부정어와 함께 나타나면 축약된다.
   
   If I hadn't slipped on the ice, I wouldn't have broken my arm.
   실제로는 얼음판에서 미끄러져 팔을 다쳤다.

   Linda wasn't at home yesterday. If she had been at home yesterday, I would have visited her.
   Jim isn't home right now. If he were at home right now, I would visit him.
   
   If the weather had been nice yesterday, we would have gone to the zoo.
   If the weather is nice today, we would go to the zoo.
