• 정중한 요청: may I, could I는 허락을 요청한다. might I도 가능하나 훨씬 정중한 표현으로 잘 쓰지 않는다.

• can I는 informal한 표현이다.

• would you나 will you 모두 정중한 요청이며, would you가 더욱 널리 쓰인다.

• could you도 정중한 요청으로 would you와 비슷하지만 그럴 능력이 있는지에 대한 질문도 포함된다.

• would you mind는 if와 함께 쓰이면 과거를 쓴다. 종종 현재형도 쓰인다.
