[Azar] the + 형용사

1. good/bad, poor/rich, healthy/sick, young/old, living/dead 등과 같이 인간의 특성을 나타내는 형용사는 the와 결합하여 명사처럼 쓰이며, 그런 부류의 사람을 나타낸다.
   
   the poor = poor people
   the dead = dead people
   The poor are often generous to each other.
   After the battle they buried the dead.
   
   
2. 이러한 표현은 복수의 의미를 가지며, 따라서 동사도 복수형을 취한다.
   
   The English drink tea.
     cf. English is spoken in many countries.
   The rich get richer, while the poor get poorer.
   
   *the deceased나 the accused처럼 특정한 상황에서 특정한 한 사람을 가리킬 경우에는 단수 취급
   
   
   
3. 이러한 표현이 복수를 나타내기 때문에 단수 의미를 나타내고자 할 때는 명사를 더하여 쓴다.
   
   The young are usually intolerant.
   The young man is fishing.
   
   
4. 선택이나 비교를 의미할 때는 대명사인 one(s)을 쓴다.
   
   I like those pencils: I'll take a blue one.
   Small bananas are often better than big ones.
   
   
5. 그러나 the + 최상급/비교급에서는 one이 생략된다.
   
   I took the largest (one).
   I bought the more expensive (one) of the two.
   Which do you like? I like the blue (one),,
